Common Dental Terms Explained
- Abrasion and Erosion: Abrasion describes the gradual wear of tooth enamel caused by brushing too hard, grinding, or chewing hard objects. Erosion refers to enamel loss from acid exposure found in food, drinks, or stomach acids. Both conditions can lead to sensitivity and changes in the appearance of the teeth
- Bonding: Bonding is a procedure in which a resin material that matches your tooth’s color is applied to a damaged or misshapen surface. After shaping the material, it is hardened so the repair feels natural and blends with your smile.
- Bruxism: Bruxism occurs when you grind or clench your teeth, often while sleeping. This repeated pressure affects the teeth, jaw muscles, and joints and can cause damage or discomfort over time.
- Crown: A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth that is damaged or weakened. At AmeriDental NJ, dental crowns are crafted from materials like porcelain that match the surrounding teeth in color and texture so the restoration looks like a natural part of your smile.
- Dental Implant: A dental implant is a metal post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial root for a replacement tooth or bridge. This solution supports missing teeth by combining strength with appearance in a way that closely resembles your natural dental structure
- Enamel: Enamel is the thin, outer layer of your tooth that protects against decay and everyday wear. It is extremely strong, but unlike other tissues, it cannot repair itself once lost, making upkeep especially important.
- Gingivitis: Gingivitis refers to early-stage gum disease caused by the buildup of plaque along the gumline. Signs include bleeding after brushing and red or swollen gums. With proper care and regular cleanings, gingivitis can be reversed before more serious issues develop.
- Invisalign: Invisalign is a clear aligner system designed to straighten teeth without traditional metal braces. The aligners are removable, nearly invisible, and custom-designed to shift teeth gradually into their desired positions.
- Root Canal: A root canal is a treatment to remove damaged or infected tissue inside a tooth. After the interior is cleaned and sealed, a further restoration, such as a crown, is placed to restore the tooth to full function and appearance.
- Sealant: A sealant is a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to guard against decay. It helps block out bacteria and food particles in the deep grooves of those teeth.
At AmeriDental NJ, Dr. Paladugu believes education builds trust and helps patients feel comfortable during every step of treatment. By learning these terms, you gain a clearer picture of your oral health and can make informed choices about your care.
