The Importance of Regular Screenings

Oral cancer can develop in many areas of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums, and throat. It often begins quietly, without noticeable pain or symptoms. Regular screenings play a vital role in finding abnormalities before they progress into more serious conditions. When oral cancer is detected early, treatment is often less invasive and has a higher success rate.

We include oral cancer screenings as part of routine dental exams. This preventive step helps protect not just your smile but also your long-term health.

Many people underestimate the risk of oral cancer. However, lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, HPV infection, and sun exposure can all increase the likelihood of developing it.

Understanding

What Happens During an Oral Cancer Exam

An oral cancer screening at AmeriDental is a quick and painless process. During your appointment, Dr. Neelima Paladugu examines your mouth, tongue, gums, lips, and throat for any signs of concern

The exam includes two main steps:

Visual inspection

Dr. Paladugu looks for red or white patches, sores that do not heal, unusual lumps, or changes in tissue color or texture.

Palpation

Using gentle pressure, she checks the neck, jaw, and inside of the mouth to feel for any abnormal swelling or firmness.

In some cases, additional tools may be used to detect tissue changes that are not visible to the naked eye. If an unusual area is found, Dr. Paladugu may recommend a follow-up visit or further testing, such as a biopsy, to gather more information.

Both conditions can vary in severity. Some patients experience only mild restrictions while others face more significant challenges.
